The Semantic Web:  Fact or Myth?

A One-Day Conference Co-sponsored by CENDI, FLICC and NFAIS
National Archives, William G. McGowan Theatre, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20408

                   Tuesday, November 17, 2009   9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

The term “semantic web” appears everywhere - in journal articles, in conference titles, and even in new product promotional material. But what exactly is semantic web?  How does it differ from Web 2.0?   Does it really exist? And what are its implications for the future of science and scholarly communication?
Mark your calendar now to attend the one-day conference, The Semantic Web: Fact or Myth, in order to learn the answers to these questions and more.

FOCUS OF THE DAY

The day will begin with an overview of the Semantic Web given by Ralph R. Swick of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) – its definition, its objectives, and the approaches being taken to bring it to full reality.  This will be followed by real life examples of how the Semantic Web is currently taking shape.  Speakers from organizations such as MIT will discuss projects that are underway and actual prototypes that are being built. And you will hear about newly-launched commercial products that have already incorporated semantic web functionalities. Potential future functionalities will be highlighted by speakers from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), who will discuss the Semantic Web research projects that they are now funding.  And in closing, Dr. James Hendler, Tetherless World Senior Constellation Professor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will explore the future promise of the Semantic Web and how it may impact the future of science and scholarly communication.
