You are invited to submit a team proposal to attend the Scholarly Communication Institute in October, 2018 in Chapel Hill, NC. The model described below should be a great participatory learning experience for all of those involved.

The Triangle Scholarly Communication Institute https://trianglesci.org/ recently announced the Request for Proposals for SCI 2018, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and invites you to join us!

This year’s theme is "Overcoming Risk" raising questions such as:
  • What strategies can scholars, universities, funding agencies, libraries, publishers and others use to promote positive change in scholarly communications, and overcome the risks and disincentives to doing so?
  • How do we help all participants to accurately calibrate the true level of risk, so they are not inhibited from action by undue fear?
  • What support structures can we put in place to reduce the real risks to those whose voices are underrepresented or suppressed, or whose status may be precarious – to help them feel welcome and be safe, and promote a greater diversity of perspectives and equitable access and treatment for all who are willing to engage?
  • What strategies can be employed to protect against the risk of vendor lock-in, or corporate capture of essential infrastructure and content?
  • How can scholarly communications practices encourage speed and openness, while avoiding the risk of ephemerality?
  • What models or practices could be developed to incentivize and reward innovation and broader public engagement, and reduce the risk to those who are seen to be breaking from traditional modes of professional advancement?
The Institute is a program that’s part retreat, part seminar, and part unconference. Based on a theme that changes every year, participants set their own agenda and define their own deliverables - the Institute brings everybody together and supplies the environment and a network of peers to help stimulate and develop creative thinking, and provide a diversity of perspectives aimed at promoting positive change in research methods, publishing, digital humanities, digital archives, and other topics related to transformations in scholarly communication.

Each year, about 30 people are invited to participate based on successful responses to a request for proposals, and the Institute covers all of their expenses to attend a 4-day program in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. At TriangleSCI, proposals are from teams rather than individuals, and we typically invite 5 teams with 4 to 6 participants each. We ask you to put together a working group that includes people who you may not otherwise have the opportunity to interact with, and to use this as an opportunity to launch new collaborations and projects. We especially encourage you to build a team with participants from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines, professions, and a broad diversity of perspectives.
