This edition guide overviews the nine contributed videos in the May 2024 edition of CNI’s Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series.

Two briefings provide updates on open infrastructure initiatives:

Open Research Infrastructure Program Updates from Lyrasis includes concise updates on the ORCID US Community, the Lyrasis DataCite US Community, and the IRUS (Institutional Repository Usage Statistics) US program.
In May 2024, Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) will release its inaugural State of Open Infrastructure report “2024 State of Open Infrastructure: Trends in Characteristics, Funding, Governance, Adoption, and Policy.” It will feature success stories, governance patterns, and policy implications for research and scholarship across four regions, with a focus on procurement issues. The briefing presents key report findings and questions.

Several briefings overview work in digital curation and repositories:

At the CNI Spring 2021 Meeting, the University of Pittsburgh Library System (ULS) described the launch of its digital preservation program. In Getting There from Here: A Path to Preserve Digital Collections, ULS staff share an update on that work and their experiences integrating their Islandora and Preservica instances, including the workflow to transfer archival scans to Preservica.
Hyku for Consortia: Providing and Sustaining Open-Source Repositories at Scale shares an update on the Hyku for Consortia Project, which provides an affordable digital repository solution for over thirty libraries across four consortia and now must coordinate projects and development across diverse user communities.
Many academic libraries have developed institutional data repositories or are considering the role of an existing institutional repository in ongoing data stewardship. With the release of US federal government documents such as the Desirable Characteristics of Data Repositories (DC-DR) and the Nelson Memo, there are many open questions about the role of these institutional systems in the evolving policy landscape of data curation. The Data Curation Network (DCN) is Championing Institutional Data Sharing Efforts and received funding to support this work at the upcoming Summit for Academic Institutional Readiness in Data Sharing (STAIRS).

The Share Family, an international library initiative, implements linked open data and enhances library workflows and services. The Share Family: Cooperation and Interconnection for a Sustainable Linked Open Data Ecosystem, overviews the linked data ecosystem and related benefits, such as cooperative cataloging, advanced metadata management tools, and discovery portals.

A few briefings examine current and potential impacts of AI and ML on research, teaching, and learning.

As a part of the Making AI Generative for Higher Education project, Ithaka S+R is tracing the generative AI (GenAI) product landscape through a tracking tool, which is a living document that lists GenAI products that are either marketed towards or used by postsecondary faculty or students. Keeping up with Generative Artificial Intelligence Products for Higher Education: Ithaka S+R’s Product Tracker overviews the tracker and the accompanying issue brief.
In Using Machine-Learning Systems to Improve Collections Development and Services, members of the Collaborative Collections Lifecycle Project (CCLP) share the potential of GenAI and large language models (LLMs) in library technology and workflows, such as enhancing metadata and item processing, identifying items for acquisitions, analyzing behavioral data, and providing content discovery recommendations.

Lastly, The University of Sydney Library successfully transformed and launched a digital presence that prioritizes the user experience. Creating a Client-Centered, Integrated, and Flexible Academic Library Website shares how they streamlined and created a unified source of information and integrated key systems like Alma and LibCal. Additionally, they collaborated with First Nations staff and students to ensure a culturally safe and welcoming digital library experience.
